A new study found that melting glaciers can result in strong earthquakes, even in areas where faults are quiet.  Apparently, glaciers help to stabilize the earth’s crust, keeping energy suppressed.  However, when glaciers melt, they become weaker and unable to prevent massive releases of stored energy.  The study noted that earthquakes hit Scandinavia about 10,000 years ago and that each occurred when ice sheets were melting.
